On vacation, we primarily try to select hotels in a good location. Somewhere we can walk to attractions. Comfortable rooms to recover after a day of sightseeing. A place with a good bar for a night cap. But sometimes a hotel becomes part of the fun. Our trip to the UK started at Sea Containers London. From the moment we checked in, there was a distinct personality as we were greeted with a shifting message board: "Here's to you, sugar tits." Bellboys in naval gear took our bags, we boarded an interesting elevator and took in the view.

The hotel is directly on the River Thames, in the Southbank. A very good location, within walking distance of famous sights, including the London Eye, Tower Bridge and Tower of London.
You can also take an artistic walk, to the Tate Modern or Shakespeare's Globe. We had a lovely night at the theater, then strolled back to Sea Containers.

There are plenty of restaurants and bars in the area. The on-site restaurant on the ground floor is upscale and relaxing, with a good view of the river, but it has some odd menu choices. The hotel bar and lounge on the top floor is nice but a little stuffy. For the best food and drink, it is best to venture out around the Southbank.

And if you need to explore more of London, there are several Underground entry points nearby.

For the great location, fun vibe and comfortable accommodations, the next time we stop in London, we'll be back.
