You Better Work It Girl-Fashion Week

Here is a fun fact about me: I love fashion. I have watched Project Runway from jump street. I love the celebrity rags for the clothes, rarely the stories. I have watched endless red carpets and awards shows, again, because I love the fits, jewelry, and hair choices. I live stream the entrances for the Met Gala. I creep on Instagram feeds during Fashion Week. I think Zendaya's style should be studied and revered.

Fashion is art, and I love art, so it makes sense. Right?!

I could go on...

Why couldn't pigeon toed gals be considered high fashion during my childhood and teen years!?

But I won't. Because the flip side of this coin is: You know me.

You know that I am the exact opposite of fashionable. And you know that I know.

I could share a thousand pictures of school days, they would all be a variation of this exact look.

I famously (infamously?) would set up a system at the beginning of each school year of my teaching career and figure out daily wear. Then I would wear the same thing...all year! I was ecstatic when my schoolhouse started offering embroidered shirts for sale. Monday pants, Tuesday pants, Wednesday pants, Thursday pants, Friday jeans...each laid out the night before and paired with a simple top or school shirt. Shoes looking like they served an orthopedic function. Hair in a pony tail, I would then jump into the laid out attire like Superman, grab my coffee, and be on my way. Glorious!

Going out on the town? For me, always some version of black pants or a skirt and a hopefully flattering top. Shoes are an issue; I am tall and pigeon-toed, therefore never required the skills necessary to walk in heels. During my very few attempts, I quite resemble a baby giraffe learning to walk. (Someone in Vegas actually said this to me. True story.) I am beyond thankful that boots are comfortable and fashionable. Catch me outside in summer in kicks, a baseball hat, and a t-shirt.

Definitely heading to dinner.

Yep.

My favorite hat. I will bet you have seen this in more than one photo.

Even when I got married (on the beach) I wore a little piece of jewelry that resembled the top of a shoe, when in fact it was not a shoe at all. Toes in the sand indeed!

Complete with sock line.

Still p-toed, but so very comfortable.

We travel so much that it is much easier to pack neutrals that can easily interchange. I own many, many black, gray, and white turtle/mock necks and all of the black pants in the land. If I feel like I need a pop of color, I usually have a fun scarf, purse, or jacket to round out a look.

It's a variation on a theme.

Exact same look under the coat.

Why am I sharing all of this nonsense?

Because I will be attending my very first fashion show event in New York City.

And not just any fashion show, but one featuring a meal by celebrity chef brothers (that is a whole separate post) and a runway by Christian Siriano.

Christian.

Siriano.

I am equal parts euphoric and terrified. He is my favorite designer!

WTF to wear!?

Maybe a fancy food mustache. I do this...a lot.

My sweet, patient husband has been consistently reminding me that I am not actually walking in the show.

If I can somehow have the night of my life whilst not standing out in either a good or bad way, success shall be thy name.

Meanwhile, I will be picking out something black and sashaying up and down my apartment hallway.

Stay tuned.
